Brand: W. E. Garrett & Sons Scotch
Snuff.<br>Manufacturer: American Snuff div of Conwood
Company.<br>Texture: Fine and dry?<br><br>Well, I finally opened this
and tried it. I was suprised to see that it had some
moisture to it. It clumped up and sort of had a moisture
level of the Doctor. This pleased me, as being that
this is a very fine, and potent snuff, if it was too
dry, it could literally bowl you over as you take
it.<br><br>I attribute this to the fact that I did not buy it
in a drug store up here, in Stamford CT, where such
a container could literally sit on the shelf for
ten years. This snuff was ordered from JR Tobacco in
North Carolina. This guy has a tremendous volume and
turn over of all tobacco products, so his stuff is
always fresh.<br><br>This snuff, has a somewhat unique
in-the-can aroma. It is a smokey, hickory type barbecue
scent, which I actually find pleasant. I was sort of
expecting a nauseatingly sweet chem lab aroma, like Tube
Rose.<br><br>Finally, the sniff!! It went in very smoothly, of course,
I was sniffing gently because of this snuffs
reputation. It was definately smoother going in than my High
Toast, probably because I find the F & T HDT TOO dry.
The Garretts went in kind of like fresh DR
JUSTICE.<br><br>THIS STUFF IS POTENT! The nicotine kick actually made
me light headed, and I am a cigarette smoker, who
smoked 30 cigarettes a day. I think I took a little too
much, as I felt a little queezy, also, when the nasal
drip comes, though not as much as I expected, felt a
little heart burn in my esophagus area. It is a very
rich stout hearted, manly snuff, not for the faint
hearted. <br><br>For me at least this snuff has a lot of
plusses. First of all it is inexpensive, compared to the
"pedigreed breed" of snuffs. I got 12 cans for $17.00. The
smell is bearable. I personally find the hickory
pleasent, better than Jockey Club with granny's bath soap
aroma.<br><br>This snuff is excellent, if you are a cigarette smoker
switching over to snuff. There is no nicotine sacrifice to
be made. If you never smoked, or are a pipe smoker,
this may be a little strong. <br><br>I would be
interested to know if any of our members who have used
S'NUFF have also tried this stuff. I have heard S'Nuff
is strong, but I personally think Garretts Snuff is
hard to beat when it comes to nicotine
content.<br><br>In closing, you really cannot go wrong, trying this
snuff. The price is more than reasonable, and even if
you do not like it it isnt like you spent $15.00 for
a little tube only to find it disappointing. This
would definately be a good snuff for after Christmas
dinner. Ultimately, I would rather have a snuff be a
little too strong, than have one that is too weak.
Sincerely, Mark.

Reply to Mark, 6/05/01<br>I agree with you Mark, having tried both quite a deal, Garrett's nicotine kick knocks S'Nuff on it's butt, though S'Nuff is pretty satisfying.<br>VR

MarkIf you want to try a snuff that really has a
lot of the smokehouse flavor try Levi Garrett & Sons
Scotch & Rappee snuff (made by Conwood) It comes in a
4.65 oz. neckless bottle for under $9.00. I recently
purchased some at Walgreen's in the Kansas City area. It is
definitely strong and should be taken gently, if that is the
right term. It's flavor is,IMO, quite different than
the other Conwood products I have used and is unique.
I would recommend it to the snuff user who
appreciates this type of snuff. The only caveat I would make
is that, at least for me, I wouldn't take too much
or too much too often. It can affect you. I figure
the supply I have will last who knows how long Until
next time,Daveymac2

Mark:<br><br>I agree entirely. This snuff has the
best nicotine kick of any snuff I've tried to date.
I've never liked most aromatic pipe tobaccos, and
until I found the Garrett's Scotch I was dispairing of
finding any snuff with a pure tobacco taste that had the
kick I was looking for. This snuff did the trick, and
has a much better kick than the McC's S'nuff. It has
become my regular snuff, which I occasionally alternatve
with the Garrett's Sweet and with F&T's HDT. <br><br>I
found the flavor of S'nuff disappointing. S'nuff tastes
slightly medicated to me. <br><br>I do have a question or
two re the Garrett's for the more experienced
snuffers with similar tastes: Is the smoky characteristic,
pure tobacco taste of the Garrett's a characteristic
of all scotch snuffs? Are there any other comparable
scotch snuffs out there that snuff takers with a taste
for Garrett's scotch should check
out?<br><br>Regards,<br><br>Jan

(Reply to scotchandtoast 6/7/01)<br>Garret
definitely has a stronger nicotine kick than any other snuff
I have ever tried. That smokey flavor stays with me
for a long time as well. I wonder if they use smoke
in their process? It doesn't seem like a natural
fresh tobacco smell? Maybe the smoke boosts the
nicotine level? What I find interesting about Garrett
Snuff is the warning label. It says "Warning this
product may cause gum disease and tooth loss". No mention
about cancer on this tin. I believe that this is
further proof that this snuff was primarily used to rub
on the gums. I can picture images of people in the
southern hills of the US and their friendly toothless
grins wearing overalls and straw hats.

Reply to daveymac2 6/6.<br><br>Thanks for the
recommendation to try Levi Garrett's Scotch and Rappee Snuff. I
am assuming that since Walgreen's is a national
chain, that I will probably be able to pick it up there.
I was checking our club's links, and I do not see
any of the suppliers carrying it. Would you happen to
know where it could be gotten on line, if my Walgreens
doesn't carry it?<br><br>Also, I am curious, what did you
mean when you said that if you take too much, "it can
affect you?" If anything else, I think the bottle looks
kind of cool. Regards, Mark.

Reply to scotchandtoast, 6/7.<br><br>Quite right,
I was planning to try S'Nuff as well, but balked at
the price, it seemed to be almost up there with F&T.
<br><br>As for your other question. The first snuff that I
tried when I decided to switch from cigarettes to
Snuff, was Tube Rose Scotch Snuff, also made by Conwood
Company. This snuff was first produced by the American
Tobacco Co, in 1907. Conwood bought up most of these
American Snuffs, and are supposedly using the original
formulae.<br><br>Tube Rose had a nauseatingly chem lab sweet taste.
While the nicotine kick was comparable to Garretts, I
could not stand the aroma. Seems that American snuffs
do not use natural essences, but these synthetic
ones. I would assume the same would be true for the
other Conwood's, like Peach, Honeybee, and others, but
do not know it as a fact. Maybe these flavored ones
were intended to be put on the gums, hence their
bizarre aroma when sniffed, I do not know. But I do know
that in terms of flavor Tube Rose in no way can be
compared to Garrett. Regards, Mark.

Mark,I'm sorry but I don't know where to buy
Scotch & Rappee snuff online. I am in the process of
contacting Conwood Company to obtain further information and
I will certainly let you know what I find out. What
I meant by "it can affect you" is that it has been
the only snuff product that gave me a nicotine
overload. I wasn't sick but definitly knew I had taken too
much. Since then I have enjoyed it more using smaller
doses.I use other types of snuff when I am at home for
variety and the fun of it but use the Conwood products as
a staple when I am away and carrying only one
type. The bottle is unique and I was surprised that the
bottle I bought was still quite fresh in that it employs
a cork stopper. When you buy it there is a
protective label over the stopper. I am fairly sure I will
destroy the stopper getting in and out of it well before
the supply runs out so I am in the process of
thinking of something to use to keep the snuff as fresh as
possible.By the way I don't know if you are aware but Conwood
Co. and the maker of Copenhagen and Skoal have been
involved in a huge lawsuit. At the trial level I believe
Conwood Co. was awarded literally millions and millions
of dollars and I believe it is now on appeal. I will
find out more about this and let you and the others
know what I discover. As I am not sure of this
informatin I think I can provide you with a website that can
give you an update. I will try to do that in the next
few days.Until then, take careDaveymac2

Mark, I'm back a lot sooner than I expected. I'm
up in the middle of the night doin' a little snuff
and surfin' the net.I was right Conwood Co. did win
at the trial level vs. U. S. Tobacco Co. The jury
awarded Conwood Co. 350 million dollars and it was
trebled to 1.05 Billion (Yes, that is with a "B") It is
now on appeal. You can find the defendants briefs and
get all the information on the lawsuit at the
defendat's website under Conwood Appeal.

Reply to daveymac2 6/8<br><br>I went to our
Walgreen's here in Norwalk Connecticut, and I found it. I
was really suprised to find it, because here, our
tobacco shops do not even carry snuff. This is a brand
new Walgreens, so this is a good sign that the snuff
is probably fresh, and that the other Walgreens in
the Tri-State area will carry it. There were two
bottles on the shelf, and I snagged them both.<br><br>I
used a cork screw to open one of the bottles, which
ended up pushing the cork into the bottle, but I was
able to spear it out. When I pulled it out, snuff came
out as well on my counter.<br><br>One recommendation
I would make to Conwood, is using a more
substantial stopper, which doesn't fall in to the bottle.
<br><br>Also, what I would recommend to my fellow snuffers if
they get this snuff, would be to periodically soak the
cork in water, dry it off thoroughly, and reinsert it.
After some time corks can deteriorate and crumble away.
This is why fine wine is always stored on it's side,
to keep the cork moist. I have to tell you though, I
was really happy to find the stuff, because, I really
do not know who else to get it from. Buying the
snuff with that unique bottle was like taking a trip
back in time. <br><br>I will try to post a review
soon. Regards, Mark.
