IMPERIAL Tobacco is shutting its 107-year-old pipe and snuff tobacco
factory in Liverpool, with the loss of 140 jobs.

The Liverpool factory has also been packing Golden Virginia finecut
tobacco and this process will move to factories in Nottingham and
Mullingar, Ireland.

The tobacco group is axing another 275 jobs by closing its factory in
Lahr, Germany.

Imps hopes the move will generate cost savings of [pounds sterling]7m
a year, although it is set to cost around [pounds sterling]27m to
implement.

The Liverpool plant produces about 67 tonnes of snuff tobacco each
year. The bulk of this, apparently, is exported to West Africa, but
demand for their snuff has declined in recent years. The fate of
Imperial's snuffs and pipe tobaccos are in the hands of contractors.

"The Golden Virginia packing operations will be transferred to the
Group's factories in Nottingham and Mullingar, Ireland. Contract
manufacturing arrangements for the production of pipe and snuff
tobacco are currently being finalised."

This will not be the first time manufacture of snuff has been shunted
around. J & H Wilson was moved from Sheffield to Liverpool in 1989.

They left out an important line from Imperial's announcement which can
be found here:

The line is:

"Contract manufacturing arrangements for the production of pipe and
snuff tobacco are currently being finalised."

The entire Imperial press release can be found here:

There was an important sentence left out . It would be the second one in
the following paragraph:

"The Golden Virginia packing operations will be transferred to the
Group's factories in Nottingham and Mullingar, Ireland. Contract
manufacturing arrangements for the production of pipe and snuff tobacco
are currently being finalised."
